The 2017 Cervantes Art Festival
The Cervantes Cultural Committee presents The Cervantes Art Festival 2017
Cervantes Art Prize 2017 Judges’ comments
This is a wonderful exhibition that demonstrates a huge range of creative and skilled artists. The work is varied and competent and is a delight to look at. The judges found it difficult to make some decisions because so many works are worthy winners. What we looked for was work that showed a creative and unusual choice of subject and composition together with a high level of skill in the medium used. It is wonderful to see such a wealth of talent and creativity. Congratulations to everyone who entered and to the art committee who made this event happen.
For judges comments on each category Winner and Highly Commended please find under FORM section as a downloadable document.
The Local resident prize of $750 sponsored by BENDIGO BANK was awarded to TIGES MORTON for 'Still Life Lures Me In'.
The Dandaragan Shire Purchase Prize of $1500 was awarded to Leon Pericles for 'Looking for the secret fishing spot'.
The TRONOX People's Choice Award, although it was very close was awarded to Jocelyne Leath for 'Oh the light'.
Cervantes Street Art 2017
The community was involved with the Street Art Trail, where residents were invited to create a work of art in their front yard to this years theme, “Sea/See or C”. The independent judges awarded Penny and Sandra Randell on Drummond Circus with 'SEE' as the winners of a nights accommodation at the JOONDALUP RESORT. Special mention was given to 'Sea Monster' on Weston St, 'My sea change' on Corunna St, 'Notorious leader of the undersea world' on Picasso Pl & 'Seabed' on Gerona Pl.
The town was also creatively decorated with wheel barrows, flags and "Little Blokes" and thanks to all the helpers that helped to install and dismantle the props.
Festival Carrot Cake 2017
The Carrot Cake competition is judged independently and the cakes are auctioned on the Opening night going to the highest bidder. The funds raised contribute to the next Arts Festival. The Carrot Cake Queen this year was awarded to Kirra Morton. She was presented the Crown and paraded it on the Opening night. Her cake sold for $61.00 so a big thank you to Kirra. The Carrot Cake King is awarded to the person whose cake made the most money. This year that was Tom Murray who wore the crown proudly. His cake raised a whopping $67.
2017 Art Workshops
The Children of Cervantes and Badgingarra participated in a Work Shop with Jarrad Martyn, they created an amazing mural that will be displayed on the Catalonia Park Toilet block wall that faces the playground.
Local residents participated in a workshop by Gayle Mason. They experienced a unique technique of acrylic paint flow and created very interesting beautiful works of art.
Renowned Artists Carolyn Francis, Leon Pericles, Jarrad Martyn, Silvana Ferrario, Gayle Mason and Neil Elliot displayed their amazing artworks. Giving visitors a chance to view and purchase these artworks. Many Artists from Geraldton to Perth (we collect from numerous locations) and local areas in between entered their work in the art competition that was independently judged. Category prizes were awarded to winners. The prize money varied from $50 for youngsters to $500 for adults.
